Project Highlights

GBFC specialist foundation division has been awarded both the sheetpiling and geotechnical packages from Gammon Construction Limited for deep foundation works on the prestigious Airport Midfield Works - Contract P533, for the Hong Kong Airport Authority.

The development located west of Terminal 1 between the two existing runways, the Midfield has an area of 410,000 square metres and is scheduled for development. When work is completed by the end of 2015, the new Midfield will be able to handle 10 million passengers annually, and meet Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) growth demand up to around 2020. This development is required to enable HKIA to keep pace with rising aviation traffic regardless of whether a new runway is built.

The packages require type II, III, IV & VI sheet piling, approx. 42,000m2 to be driven (optional extraction) to depths of up to 25 metres. Approx 94,000m of Pre-boring works shall be conducted using Liebherr LRB 255's with BVV Double Rotary Tooling. Sheet piling works by BVV VML 40 and 52M Hydraulic vibrators. Using these high frequency vibrators performance shall be improved reducing unwanted external vibration and noise with less impact on the environment.

The geotechnical package requires 132 wells for observation, dewatering & recharging, approx 7000m2 of ground treatment and the preboring and installation of approx 600m of king posts.

GBFC has the capability, experience and resource capacity to pursue additional projects to be released in the near future.

The construction works are scheduled to begin immediately and the mobilisation phase to site of the GBFC assets has commenced.
